CdV P096 Drum n bass special

It doesn’t seem so long ago that we had a drum n bass show, but such is the dynamism and freshness of the scene at the moment that we need to return again for our last show before summer. Rather than the heavier sound featured on the likes of Calyx & Teebee’s recent Fabriclive 76 mix CD, we push for more vocal-driven tracks that convey the element of rolling soul and tough chic that are unique to DnB. As well as brand new stuff from Lenzman and Tokyo Prose and from labels like Soul:R and Hospital we start with a menacing killer from Matrix from his 1999 album “Sleepwalk”.

CdV P086 Drum n bass special

Following on from our recent bass music show it seems like time to check in to drum n bass and see where things are at the midpoint of 2014. There is still plenty of invention going on, especially amongst the ambient end of the spectrum in the sculpted drum scapes of Alaska, Fre4knc, Millie and Andrea and Indigo. Vocals come to the fore on tracks by Ivy Lab and Stranjah, whereas harder sounds and rhythmic pressure are the cornerstone of tracks by Safire, Dom and Roland and Teklife’s DJ Earl. Finally, we open the show with a classic from Boymerang from the heyday of the genre.

Drum n bass, like trance, is often a marginalised genre of current dance music, left to its own fans and its niche nights and ignored by media outlets and rarely crossing over into the broader electronic consciousness.
