CdV P094 Martyn special

It is easy to take Martijn Deykers for granted. For the last decade the Dutch producer has been a constant presence at the forefront of electronica, crossing over from drum n bass to dubstep and then on to house, but never abandoning the tropes of the other styles as he has moved on. Read more…

CdV P091 Sonar 2014 Roundup

This week we return to the fold of Sonar 2014 and recap some of the highlights, lowlights and tendencies from this year starting with Japanese all-girl group Nisennenmondai who delivered the standout show with their tight and edgy minimal dystopian techno thrashed out on guitar, bass and drums. Audio Texture Radio Show – June 16, 2014

One of those old soul boys who are still doing it, Lee Fields, kicked off the show this week with a track from this new album out on Truth and Soul which paved the way nicely for some woefully short, yet super souful, beats from the one and only Madlib. Read more…

CdV P087 World Cup special

Cabeza de Vaca loves the World Cup. It’s a chance to collect a new set of Panini, to go to the pub and watch three matches of elite football every day for a month and to listen to your favourite football tracks, and with every world cup there’s always a new one, usually by Pique’s wife Shakira. There’s no Shakira or Pique here, but no need, as like the World Cup, Cabeza de Vaca likes to range across land and sea to gather in the best of the best. This week we celebrate 50 years of World Cup and football with tunes and styles from as far afield as Norweigan rap, Japanese jazz, 60s rockabilly, 90s electronica and techno and of course the timeless Kevin Keegan. CdV P084 Bass music special

Our first bass music program of the year finds dubstep either on the ropes or nonchalantly promiscuous, particularly with techno, with many traditional artists and labels edging towards more regimented sounds. Yet there are still plenty at the core who are capable of interesting and innovative tunes including the impressive Wen who has delivered “Signals” one of the year’s best albums already, the returning Cooly G and the nucleus formed around Bristol’s Pinch to name a few. Somewhere into this mix we throw a tribute to the late DJ Rashad and also bookend the program between some extraordinary tracks from Kryptic Minds’ Osiris Music UK label.

CdV P079 Perc special

Sometimes Perc still feels like a new artist, but it is easy to forget that his rise to prominence has taken a decade of hard work, perseverance and risks. The north London-based artist has recently delivered his second genre defining album “The power and the glory” which mixes blatant experimentalism with crunchy and battering rhythms without being afraid to make political comment and keep the mind as well as the body occupied. Ali Wells’s label Perc Trax and his new sublabel Submit have also become powerful strongholds of the modern industrial techno sound alongside newcomers Fifth Wall Records and Karl O’Connor’s Downwards imprint, who celebrate their 20th anniversary year, and who both feature prominently this week.

Soul, dub madness, hip hop and Brazil

Soul, dub madness, hip hop and Brazil dominate this weeks show kicking off with a track from the excellent debut album from Gabriel Garzon-Montana which has been on repeat all week and is highly recommended. Hollie Cook then took the soul and gave it a Prince Fatty riddim, look out for her new album coming on Mr. Bongo later this year. We couldn’t resist playing the kookly little dub from the new Kalbata & Mixmonster single which led into the crazy dub techno vibes of Martijn Comes, closely followed by the analogue dub vibes of “Robert Rental” a taster from Ekoplekz‘s excellent album coming in March on Planet Mu. CdV P074 Terrence Dixon special

Techno has always had a close relationship with anonymity, but there are not many artists who can claim to be unknown after 20 years in the business despite always remaining in full sight. Detroit’s Terrence Dixon is one of the few. Read more…
