CdV P059: Laurel Halo special

In only a few short years American artist Laurel Halo has already left a defining mark on electronic music. Her 2011 breakthrough “Hour logic” was an instant reference point for future sounds to follow with its striking blend of epic rave sounds and the hazy synth pop of the west coast Not Not Fun scene.

CdV P058: Dub techno special

Due to technical issues a voiceless program this week, with an unmixed run of dub techno and dub-inspired tracks replacing our promised special on Laurel Halo which will be next week. There is plenty on offer though, from some powerful driving club tracks from Bleak, Reeko and Savas Pascalidis, to more atmospheric numbers by Andrea Cichecki, Grad_U and Deepchord, some more experimental dub-flavoured electronica from Genotype and Downliners Sekt and even a vocal track by the under rated German producer Fenin.

CdV P056: ASC special

Sometimes it seems that there are fewer and fewer greats of electronic music who can or want to shirk the spotlight and quietly go about their business while the rest battle it out continuously for their place and piece of the summit.

CdV P048: Drum n bass special

Drum n bass, like trance, is often a marginalised genre of current dance music, left to its own fans and its niche nights and ignored by media outlets and rarely crossing over into the broader electronic consciousness.

CdV P047: Ambient special

For those in the Northern hemisphere suffering a late summer heat wave, we start the program in the icy realms of Frozen Thoughts on the Glacial Movements label. We stick to the shadows with Sleeper and Savvas Ysastis’s collaboration with 12K’s Taylor Deupree before a quiet religious moment with Aquarelle. Then for those whiling away the cold winter months in the southern hemisphere we turn to the tropical island sounds of Tuluum Shimmering and Xiphiidae, both on Aguirre records. For the finale it is a downward spiral as only the ever prolific Bvdub and Black Swan could provide. All the travelling is inside your head this week on Cabeza de Vaca and Scanner FM.

CdV P046: Lo-fi post punk industrial pop

Lock up your daughters: Cabeza de Vaca goes feral this week with a collection of dirty, lo-fi industrial-tinged pop tracks that trace the line from Suicide and Cabaret Voltaire to the modern pretenders The KVB, Acteurs, James Holden and more. Expect blistering guitars, dirty moods and plenty of low fidelity beats before summer is done.

CdV P045: Anthony Naples special

There are plenty of new-comers on this week’s show, including the centre of attention, Miami-raised and Brooklyn-based producer and DJ Anthony Naples. From his very first release last year on Mister Saturday Night Records he has captured the attention of the house scene, blending in the current vogue for low-fi with a more polished finish as well as balancing catchy groove with experimental-leaning arrangements. Not bad for an artist with less than a handful of 12”s under his belt.

CdV P044: Morphosis special

The music of Lebanese artist Rabih Beani defies easy description. His now revered techno under the name Morphosis is said to «crack apart the mechanical rhythm of the loop», whereas with Upperground Orchestra he has championed improvisation and cross-genre fertilisation between jazz and electronica. Recently under his own name he has also tried to revisit and reinvent the notion of modern Lebanese folk music. This week on Cabeza de Vaca and Scanner FM, we open the lid on the complicated and influential world of Rabih Beaini.

CdV P043: Dub techno special

This week on Cabeza de Vaca and Scanner FM we preview a mix of Spanish and international artists/labels who all purvey their own distinct take on the dub techno sound. We range from the deep atmospheres of Exium from Asturias and Refracted’s forest gloom to the heavy industrial malaise of the mysterious Subjected and the moody dubstep of Berlin’s Freund der Familie.
