It is easy to take Martijn Deykers for granted. For the last decade the Dutch producer has been a constant presence at the forefront of electronica, crossing over from drum n bass to dubstep and then on to house, but never abandoning the tropes of the other styles as he has moved on.
This week we return to the fold of Sonar 2014 and recap some of the highlights, lowlights and tendencies from this year starting with Japanese all-girl group Nisennenmondai who delivered the standout show with their tight and edgy minimal dystopian techno thrashed out on guitar, bass and drums.
Bass music, drum n bass, dubstep, grime, footwork, whatever you want to call it was by far the most interesting part of electronic music in 2013. There was always a new surprise or another stand out album around the corner.
Sometimes it seems that there are fewer and fewer greats of electronic music who can or want to shirk the spotlight and quietly go about their business while the rest battle it out continuously for their place and piece of the summit.
